The spring ’22 semester has officially begun, and with that, we are pleased to welcome four new instructors to our team! Each instructor will be teaching our core-curriculum courses, DES INV 211, 212, and 219. We look forward to the contributions these artists, designers, and thinkers will bring to our third semester of the Berkeley MDes.

Co-teaching DES INV 211: Designing Emerging Technologies I are Kuan-Ju Wu and Brian Hinch

Kuan-Ju Wu: Kuan-Ju is a creative technologist and new media artist who is interested in creating delightful interactions between humans, machines, and environments. His work has been shown in a variety of venues, including Ars Electronica, Linz; Japan Media Art Festival, Tokyo; and Current New Media Art Festival, Santa Fe. Kuan-Ju received his Masters in Tangible Interaction Design from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, and his Bachelor in Electronics Engineering from National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan.

Brian Hinch: Brian is a Senior Design Technologist at Carta and a Design+Technology Consultant at Tellart. He believes deeply in the value of cross-disciplinary collaboration, and that by constantly reconsidering the design of the design process itself we will see more genuinely beneficial things in the world. Brian combines formal training at Rhode Island School of Design with years building software and hardware—internally and for clients—and loves systems that are meaningful, extensible, and sustainable.

Leading DES INV 212: Designing Emerging Technologies II is Floor van de Velde

Floor van de Velde: Floor is a practicing artist and Professor of the Practice of sculpture at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. She has a background in sculpture, computational design and fabrication, graphic design, and sound studies. She investigates how digital tools may give artists additional ways to engage in hybrid and interdisciplinary practices—melding methods of and means of production. She received a BFA in Sculpture from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and an MS in Art, Culture, and Technology from MIT.

Teaching DES INV 219: Capstone Portfolio is Yoon Bahk

Yoon Bahk: Yoon is the founder of Design Can Do, an organization that provides social innovation using design methodologies in a workshop platform. She is a designer, with a MA in Innovation Design Engineering from the Royal College of Art and a BSc in Industrial Design from KAIST. As an artist, Yoon also created the project RammoJammo, in which she seeks to draw the world in hopes of creating a comprehensive visual archive.

WELCOME KUAN-JU, BRIAN, FLOOR, AND YOON TO THE MDES FAMILY!
