We have been shocked by the recent violence in Georgia that took the lives of innocent people – six of these victims being of Asian descent and seven being women. Sadly, this act of brutality is not an isolated incident but is part of a surge in violence against Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) people in the U.S. Gender-based violence, and racialized violence against many communities, especially against black, Indigenous, Latinx, Near and Middle Eastern, and AAPI peoples, continue to be systemic problems in our society.

The Berkeley MDes stands with AAPI and all BIPOC people at UC Berkeley and beyond and condemns race and gender-based violence in all of their forms. Core to the Berkeley MDes mission is to promote technological equity and justice. As innovators, designers, and humanists we are reminded that we are empowered in our coursework, studio life, and professional practice to champion equity in our designs, to use our skills and technologies to directly confront injustice, and educate to raise awareness toward the elimination of racialized and gender-based violence in all its forms.

We stand united in designing together a better future for all!
