Tomas Garcia is a cross-disciplinary designer and technologist who translates speculative ideas into practical and resonant experiences. As a Creative Technologist at the Samsung Design Innovation Center, he operates at the convergence of research, design, and engineering. There, he collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to imagine the future of consumer technology through hands-on exploration with emerging hardware and software.

His journey to Samsung was shaped by his time in the Master of Design program at UC Berkeley, where his studies focused on the interplay between craft, form, and technology. His thesis project, Techtonic Toolkit, proposed a communication system to connect schools, families, and children in the aftermath of large-scale natural disasters, and was recognized with a Fast Company Innovation by Design award.

Before entering the MDes program, Tomas served as Vice President of Technology and Digital Media at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). In that role, he oversaw a broad ecosystem of digital initiatives, using technology to interpret artistic practices, enhance visitor engagement, and expand access to LACMA’s collections and exhibitions.

Tomas is excited to speak with MDes students and alumni about the following topics (and more!):

  • All things prototyping (screen-based and hardware)
  • Designing with and for AI
  • The intersection of Art + Technology
